Get to where you want to be – The A’Hern family
When Urban Money’s Geoff Wilson first met Nick and Jennifer A’Hern it was the mid 90’s, and Nick had just won his first gold medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada.
Nick and Jen were living on campus at the AIS in Canberra and were desperately looking to call a place their own and somewhere they could start their family. That’s when they met Geoff.
At the time Geoff was the co-founder of one of Australia’s first mortgage broking firms and he met the A’Hern’s on a mobile appointment at their cosy campus abode.
“I will never forget meeting the A’Hern’s for the first time, Jen was a very successful stockist at David Jones and Nick was a professional athlete who also had a successful hairdressing business on the side,” Geoff said.
“Right from the word go I knew this was a couple that didn’t do anything by halves and their passion was contagious,” Geoff added.
After their initial discussion it was clear the A’Hern’s had major plans that extended into the future past Nick’s successful international athletics career to a time when the couple would eventually have children and a successful personal training business.
Geoff was able to assist the Nick and Jen into their first home, in one of Canberra’s up and coming suburbs. It was this first home set the foundation for their future investment strategy.
“Back then as a Mortgage Broker I was able to help Nick and Jen access over 30 lenders. Today, as a trusted Mortgage Manager we still offer a broking service as well as offer our own range of home loan products. By offering our own range of products we can better tailor and look after our customers for the life of their loan,” Geoff said.Today, as a trusted Mortgage Manager we still offer a broking service as well as offer our own range of home loan products. It wasn’t until after Nick’s fourth place success at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, another gold medal performance at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games and a successful top ten finish at the Sydney 2000 Olympics that Nick and Jen started A’Hern Fitness.
The couple successfully combined raising Sian and Kye while growing their business and as their financial needs changed, they trusted Geoff to help them reach their personal and business finance goals.
Jennifer said, “when we want to do something big, Geoff is always our first phone call. Geoff has always been there for us, he helped us buy our first home and has been there for us ever since. Each time our circumstances have changed Geoff has always been there to put together the best deal he can for us. Dare I say he has saved us thousands over the years!”
“I distinctly remember a time when the kids were young, and Nick and I were working long …longer… hours (our days are always long) with the new business and Geoff was happy to work in with us and do a lot of the running around for us. He really was a champ,” said Jennifer.
Fast forward to today, and success breeds success.

The business has won a number of awards for innovation and excellence and now employs ten staff members.
At the same time, the children, Sian and Kye have developed into junior downhill mountain bike champions, with Sian recently wrapping up the Female Junior World Cup crown with races in Australia, Canada and Europe while younger brother Kye is ranked in the top three in Australia for his age.
“We have been pretty lucky, particularly this year with the amazing success of our children. But at the same time success comes by combining passion and planning. It also helps to surround yourself with experts like Geoff,’ Jennifer said.
“Which reminds me it is about that time we sat down with Geoff and let him know what we have planned for the next couple of years!”
